Who is a Tycoon?

The word tycoon comes from the Japanese word ‘taikun’ which means a prince or a great lord. A tycoon is someone who is established in his field or an important man. A tycoon is someone who has either built a successful empire or is building one.

Traditionally tycoons were associated with the mining industry, railroads, or oil. Now, these tycoons are considered in the field of entrepreneurship, technology, and entertainment.

Tycoons generally build an empire and leave behind a legacy. There are many in India too. Industrialist tycoons include Mukesh Ambani. According to a Forbes report, his current net worth is $106.2 billion. He runs Reliance industries with revenue close to $74 billion. Jio (Reliance telecom) includes investors such as Google and Facebook. He is the richest man in India.

The TATA group has been one of the largest business houses in India for more than 6 decades. Today, it does not rank in the top 100 list but rather stands at 433rd position in the list. This is seen due to the massive philanthropy work that is being done through the TATA trust.

TATA group is a business empire that is metals, mining, IT, auto, chemicals, transport, and many others.

Oprah Winfrey gained her wealth through her popular TV show ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show.’ She did not set up industries but rather gained success through her talk show that ran for 25 years. According to a Forbes report, she is considered a self-made richest woman in America with a net worth of $2.7 billion.
